DENVER – Colorado Chamber President and CEO Loren Furman this week was appointed to the Colorado Artificial Intelligence Impact Task Force by Gov. Jared Polis. The task force is expected to provide guidance on how artificial intelligence (AI) can be regulated to ensure its development in Colorado is both responsible and fair.

“Colorado’s technology industry is a strong economic driver for the state and we have the opportunity to be a leader for tech growth by advancing the right policies to foster innovation,” said Furman. “The responsible development and regulation of artificial intelligence systems is critical to keeping Colorado competitive and ensuring we maximize our position as a top state for technology advancement. I look forward to providing the perspective of the statewide business community to ensure that future policies governing AI are balanced to encourage economic growth.”

The task force stems from the passage of HB 1468 in the 2024 legislative session. The issues of study include the definition of key terms, disclosure requirements for businesses, best practices and ethics, disproportionately impacted communities, and the use of facial recognition and biometric technology. The task force will report recommendations to the Joint Technology Committee and the Governor’s Office by February 1, 2025.

The Colorado Chamber has taken critical steps towards advancing Colorado’s technology industry through initiatives such as its Technology Alliance. The alliance brings together Colorado’s tech community to support policies that enhance the state’s tech competitiveness. Through the alliance, Furman played a critical role in the development and negotiations of several major technology bills, including the comprehensive AI regulatory bill SB 205. The bill establishes standards and requirements for the development and use of AI systems.
