DENVER – The Colorado Chamber of Commerce today released the following statement in response to tariffs unveiled this week by the federal government:
“We’re concerned with any policy that disrupts predictability in the market or increases the cost of doing business – whether that comes from the state or federal government,” said Colorado Chamber President and CEO Loren Furman. “We’ve heard a range of feedback from our members statewide on tariffs, from uncertainty about the future to outrage over detrimental financial impacts. Specifically for Colorado, which is already one of the most expensive states to live and do business, tariffs could seriously interfere with our work to improve competitiveness and the broader economy. We will continue to assess the impact of these new trade policies on Colorado businesses as we work to improve our statewide economic climate.”
The Colorado Chamber is the state affiliate of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). According to the NAM, for every $1 of manufacturing output, Colorado imports 7 cents of inputs from our trading partners Canada and Mexico. For Canada, Colorado’s largest trading partner, the state imports $5.4 billion of goods and exports $1.6 billion annually.
