Simon Allen of Darren Patterson Christian Academy won the top prize at the second annual Buena Vista Civics Bee on Sunday afternoon in the Buena Vista Heritage Museum.
Joseph Drexler, also a DPCA student, and Buena Vista Middle School student Andee Quilico came in second and third at the Bee. The three are eligible to compete in the statewide bee in Denver in May.
Hosted by the League of Women Voters and the Buena Vista Chamber of Commerce, the event was split into two sections: First, a full board of finalists competed in a two-round multiple-choice quiz. Then, the top five scorers in that test gave brief presentations about their essays and answered follow-up questions from a panel of judges including Buena Vista Mayor Libby Fay, Chaffee County Commissioner Keith Baker, Chaffee County Times Editor Hannah Harn, Buena Vista Public Library executive director Cecilia LaFrance and Ark Valley Voice board member Daniel Smith.
