The Mountain Mail: Civics Bee opens for middle schoolers

Colorado middle schoolers are invited to participate in the second annual civics competition hosted by the League of Women Voters of Chaffee County and the Buena Vista Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

The “Civics Bee” encourages young people to engage in civics and contribute to their community, and participation offers the chance to win recognition and cash prizes, a press release stated.

The competition is open to sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders in Colorado, and all entries are due Jan. 8. Twenty local entries will be selected to compete in March in Buena Vista, and local finalists from the March competition will be invited to compete in May in Denver for the state finals. Those who make it past the state finals in Denver will be invited to Washington, D.C., to compete in the National Civics Bee championship in the fall.
