Daily Sentinel: Businesses are leaving Colorado — are state leaders paying attention?

Nearly six months ago, I reported that Colorado was in the top five states for outmigration in 2025 according to a report by United Van Lines. This week, the Common Sense Institute released research indicating that Colorado lost workplaces at one of the highest rates in the country in 2024 (the most recent year that a full set of data is available).

While thankfully many of these bills have been killed or vetoed, there is definitely a pattern of “Let’s make business pay” that is disturbing to employers in Colorado. What will the next legislative or rulemaking session bring? Is it any wonder that — according to a report on corporate relocation, expansion and site selection published by the Colorado Chamber of Commerce — 98 firms with over 13,000 employees have chosen against operating in Colorado since 2019? The Common Sense Institute also published a map quantifying how other states did in creating workplaces and jobs in 2024. Every single state that borders Colorado saw positive growth in the number of business establishment and employment.
