Sign Your Name: SB 5 Veto Letter

Senate Bill 5, which would overturn major provisions of Colorado’s longstanding labor laws, has passed the state legislature and is on its way to the governor.

The bill passed as it was originally written with no amendments – meaning it will still eliminate the second union security election. This will make it easier for labor unions to require mandatory dues deductions from all worker paychecks, whether they choose to participate in the union or not.

The business community came to the negotiating table in good faith, offering three different proposals in an effort to find a compromise. Ultimately, we were not met with the same willingness from union executives.

As employers statewide, we continue to stand with employees who want a say in how they spend their hard-earned pay checks. Jobs and livelihoods should not be put at risk because a worker chooses not to join a union, and no employee should be compelled to reduce their paychecks to support union officials who they do not feel represent them or may use that money to support political causes they disagree with.

For that reason, business groups will be asking Gov. Jared Polis to veto Senate Bill 5 to protect worker choice while preserving Colorado’s unique status as a labor peace state. As part of our veto request, we will be attaching a list of names of both workers and business leaders who oppose Senate Bill 5.
