What We’re Watching: HB 1005

A bill that seeks to bring the Sundance Film Festival to Colorado cleared its second hearing today in the House Finance Committee. House Bill 1005 would offer $5 million in annual tax credits to bring the festival to Boulder, which could in turn pump over $100 million into the local economy each year.

The Colorado Chamber’s Government Affairs Council has taken a “support” position on the bill, which is supported by the Boulder Chamber and other regional businesses and organizations. A large-scale festival like Sundance would not only support local restaurants, hotels, and retailers, but it could also offer educational and workforce opportunities for students at CU Boulder.

The Sundance Film Festival organizers have confirmed that they are deliberating between keeping the annual event in Park City, Utah or moving it to either Boulder or Cincinnati, Ohio. A final decision will be made by March 2025.
