In honor of Black History Month, the Colorado Chamber is recognizing Black business owners, entrepreneurs, executives, and job creators who have grown their businesses from the ground up and are core to our local Colorado communities.
Today’s feature is Mauritha and Harold Hughes with FLEXX ID
In 2018, Mauritha and Harold Hughes founded FLEXX ID, a family-owned brand that manufactures wearable wallets and ID holders designed to solve everyday challenges both in and out of the workplace. Since the business was launched, they have seen immense growth in sales and earned recognition from Amazon as one of the top sellers in Colorado.
FLEXX ID has been featured on Travel + Leisure’s list of “Best Travel Wallets,” with their wallets gaining popularity as a great way to carry ski passes on the mountain. However, Harold and Mauritha are most proud of their products’ impact in health care and other community-serving roles.
In addition to his role as CEO and founder of FLEXX ID, Harold has served as a Denver firefighter and emergency medical technician for 26 years. It was during this time that he came up with the idea for his wearable armband design. While responding to a medical emergency, Harold became frustrated with his ID dangling from his lanyard, impeding his ability to provide medical care. He quickly threw aside his lanyard and completed his care. When reliving the day’s events, he found himself thinking that there must be a better way to carry an ID while working, and the idea for FLEXX ID’s wearable wallet was born. Harold’s background in community service has guided the business to prioritize those who are helping others.
Mauritha, co-founder and operations chief of FLEXX ID, holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Colorado and a master’s degree in medical education from the University of Southern California. She is also a certified coach with the International Coaching Federation and a qualified administrator of the Intercultural Development Inventory. Mauritha has had a wide-reaching career as a leader, coach and consultant. She has played a key role in developing inclusive leadership strategies, advancing systems of equity and leading interactive workshops in collaboration with executives in health care, education and business.
Harold and Mauritha have proven themselves as the perfect team to continue growing FLEXX ID. Harold’s ambitious plans for design, manufacturing and scaling combined with Mauritha’s attention to detail and passion for connecting with people has driven the business into new markets and industries. They encourage people to celebrate Black History Month by supporting and promoting Black founders and Black-owned businesses.
