DBJ: Institutes of higher education in Colorado want to improve their students’ economic prospects. Do they make the grade?

People name many reasons for considering higher education. Learning new skills. Becoming a more informed citizen. Personal achievement.

The most mentioned reason in a recent poll conducted by Gallup and Lumina Foundation, however, revolved around a future career. About three-quarters of the U.S. adults surveyed — a group that included people currently enrolled in higher education and those who were considering enrolling — named some sort of job-centric motivation.

To members of The Education to Employment Alliance, a partnership between business groups like the Colorado Chamber of Commerce and Colorado Succeeds, a statistic like that is a sign that something has gone awry in the education-to-workforce pipeline.
