Women’s History Month Feature: Alanna McKiernan

In honor of Women’s History Month and the Chamber’s Women’s Forum, the Colorado Chamber is recognizing women business leaders, executives, and job creators who are core to our local Colorado communities. Each of the women featured in the month of March are panelists for the Colorado Chamber’s Women’s Forum happening on March 21.

 Today’s feature is Alanna McKiernan with Kaiser Permanente

Alanna McKiernan is the vice president and regional counsel for Kaiser Permanente in Colorado, where she is an integral member of the senior leadership team. In this role, she is responsible for coordinating, managing and overseeing all legal and regulatory matters. McKiernan participates in multidisciplinary teams addressing legal, compliance, business and operational issues, providing strategic advice on overall business, operation, network and growth strategies.

Before assuming her current position in 2021, McKiernan served as the deputy general counsel to Maui Health System, a subsidiary of Kaiser Foundation Hospitals. McKiernan also held the position of senior counsel for Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. In these capacities, she served as the lead negotiator during a groundbreaking public-private partnership with the State of Hawaii, showcasing her expertise in acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures and strategic affiliations.

During the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, McKiernan played a crucial role in Kaiser Permanente’s vaccination efforts. She served as the lead counsel for the development and implementation of a mass vaccination consortium, bringing together state and federal government support and community health organizations to administer vaccines across the enterprise.

Before joining Kaiser Permanente in 2011, Alanna was an attorney with Whiteman Osterman & Hanna, LLP, in Albany, New York, and a partner at Atlantic Advisory Group in Boston and Hamilton, Bermuda.

McKiernan earned her bachelor’s degree from St. Thomas Aquinas College, her master’s degree at Boston College and her juris doctorate at Suffolk University Law School. She is also a graduate of the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program.  McKiernan is a member of the Bar of the United States Supreme Court and of the State Bars of New York, Massachusetts, California and Colorado

Beyond her professional achievements, McKiernan is dedicated to community service as she routinely seeks opportunities to serve as an advocate for those in need. She is a co-founder and past president of Women of the World, an organization dedicated to advancing the health, education and welfare of women and girls. She is a former board member of the Asociación Cultural Española and a current member of the Colorado Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Residing in Denver with her husband and two daughters, McKiernan embraces the vibrant Colorado lifestyle. In her leisure time, she enjoys biking, hiking and attending theater and live music performances.
