Shelley and Shawn Murray of Murray Security Services: From Military Service to Small Business Ownership
Murray Security Services (MSS) is a Colorado Springs-based information and cyber security, environmental, safety and systems engineering company. The company’s main focus is on professional training as well as certification and business consulting.
Shelley Murray serves as the CEO and director of operations for the company. Shelley is a recently retired United States Air Force nurse and manages the day-to-day activities of the organization, ensuring client relations are maintained.
Dr. Shawn Murray is president of the consulting division and is the chief academic officer. Dr. Murray transitioned to the commercial industry after 12 years of government service and has worked in several environmental, safety and information security positions. He has travelled the world leading cyber and physical security assessments and advising leaders.
Both partners have military backgrounds and have worked with and for the federal government for several years. Murray Security Services is also woman-owned and service-disabled veteran-owned business.
The company was started in 2004 as a professional management company under the parent name Alpine Management & Investments, LLC. In 2012, the company expanded their cybersecurity consulting services and training division and officially became Murray Security Services.
Through client referrals and word-of-mouth exposure, Murray Security Services has become very reputable and reliable within their industry and community. They deliver consistent training and consulting services that provide their clients with a means of identifying cybersecurity strategies and executing them. Because of this commitment, their business has grown significantly in recent years. Dr. Murray was even recently invited to present at the National Security Institute IMPACT Conference in Washington D.C. regarding how to build an effective insider threat program.
Shawn and Shelley’s advice for those wanting to start their own business is simple: there is no time like the present.
“Ask yourself a few questions first,” Dr. Shawn Murray said. “Do you know what it is you want to offer and are you good at it? Who are your competitors and what sets you apart from them? What is your contribution? Are you willing to work long hours to accomplish your goals? Have you developed a strategic plan? How do you plan to finance your business, raise capital, and maintain funding for daily operating expenses? All of these things need to be considered!”
