Colorado Chamber Takes Support Position on Family Leave Savings Account and Veteran Hiring Preference Bills

The Colorado Chamber’s Labor and Employment Council met this week to discuss and vote on upcoming legislation in the General Assembly. The Council voted to take a support position on two bills: House Bill 1193 and House Bill 1222.

HB 1193 presents an alternative to a family leave mandate or state-run program by offering tax incentives to encourage businesses to contribute to family and medical leave for their employees. It also offers tax incentives to workers for putting money aside into a leave savings account.

The Colorado Chamber believes an approach that incentivizes employers to offer family and medical leave for their employees would be an effective and successful approach.

HB 1222 allows a private employer to give preference to veterans and spouses of disabled veterans or veterans killed in the line of duty when hiring a new employee as long as the veteran or the spouse is as qualified as other applicants for employment. The Colorado Chamber supports the ability of businesses to adopt a veteran preference policy in hiring.

The next Labor and Employment Council will be held on March 18th, 2020.
